CallGraph… a simple Skype Voice Recording Tool

[This blogpost was originally written by me and published on WebYantra.net, but that website does not seem to be maintained anymore. I am re-publishing this article on my blog so as to keep the content available to anyone who may still be interested in reading it.]

CallGraph is a free tool from Sedna Wireless (a Bangalore based startup) to record Skype conversations on your computer as MP3 files. CallGraph is not the first product to offer Skype call recording, competing with similar and well known products like Pamela and Total Recorder. However, CallGraph offers a simple, minimalistic interface without any bells and whistles attached and best of all, it’s completely free.

The sound is recorded at a bitrate of 128kbps, making it ideal for podcasts and at the same time maintaining a decent file size. Sound quality however is not great and needs some serious improvisation. CallGraph imposes no restriction on recording time and allows you to record Skype to Skype (both incoming and outgoing), SkypeIn, SkypeOut calls and SkypeCasts too.

You can use your recordings for recording podcasts, official or casual telephonic conversations and interesting discussions on SkypeCasts. You need to “tag” your conversations individually to search previously recorded conversations. Some tags are already generated for you and you can edit them or add some more. CallGraph provides only basic level search functionality. Check out the video below for a quick demo:

You should keep in mind that recording voice calls may be illegal in some areas. CallGraph takes no action on that front – apart from flashing a message saying “Please inform your contact” (that the conversation is being recorded), no other action is taken. For now, CallGraph is not supported on any other VoIP tool like GTalk, Yahoo Messenger etc. other than Skype.

CallGraph is still in beta so future updates should be rolling out very quickly based on the reviews and feedback the developers receive. But at the end of the day, it’s the recording that really matters and CallGraph does the job and does it well.
