Top 10 reasons why iPhone 3GS will be a success in India

1. Just like Nokia phones, we were waiting for iPhone 3G prices to drop. It never happened. Then why wait with 3GS?

2. Apple announced a tentative launch date way back. We’ve all saved up the cash.

3. It has been a year since 3G launch. We were all hoping for an “iPhone killer”. It never happened. iPhone still rules.

4. Old habits die hard. It was hard to digest that Nokia is no more the #1. Today usability is more important for some than features.

5. The iPhone lacked a lot of basic features even a 5k phone had. Apple fixed most of them.

6. Back then, the iPhone was new, un-reviewed and untested. Not many were ready to take the plunge. Not so anymore.

7. We were waiting for “3G” before buying an iPhone 3G. It never happened and it doesn’t seem likely either. The world has already started talking about 4G.

8. We were hoping that the iPhone will also open up to other carriers. Never happened.

9. We’ve seen it, touched it, heard about it. Everything seems so much more familiar.

10. 30k sounded like a lot of money those days. Now, a lot of phones kiss the 30-40k band. It doesn’t seem “that” expensive anymore.

  1. Ok.. we all like the iphone a lot and what the 3GS to be launched in India soon.. but i guess its biggest point for success has to be the service provider i.e airtel/vodafone..

    coz
    1) price above 30k for the fone is still quite insane.. cant we have a contract thing like at&t??

    2) Data plan?? iphone is a beautiful device to use coz it has a whole ecosystem of applications.. for which we need data access on iphone.. as in what is an iphone without data or limited data access on the device?? and what do airtel/vodafone give us.. a single insanely expensive data plan..

yesterday i was at a mall in hyderabad where airtel was promoting the new blacberry curve 8250… now blackberry also faced the similar problems like the iphone sometime back(I AM NOT COMPARING THE TWO PHONES !!).

    1) The device was expensive
    2) the data plan was like for 1000/- bucks

    What do we see now
    1) device at 16,000/- ofcourse its a airtel locked device
    2) they have introduced a data plan for 299/- that give me unlimited mail access + unlimited IM access + unlimted access to limited sites like google, facebook, flickr, orkut etc.

Now this now seems like a fair deal to me… its a smart move by blackberry to capture the non-enterprise users.. and its working well for blackberry,, so why not apple??

I just “hope” that the reason for delay for the launch is probably that apple is taking time to come up with a better deal for the consumers πŸ˜€ I have my fingers crossed and hope its happens soon.. if apple still fails to impress me this time.. i am sure i will be walking to the next airtel shop to buy a BlackBerry

  3. Thanks for the comment Surbhit!

I don’t really believe that Airtel/Vodafone have a choice to provide subsidized handsets in India because of the ultra-low margins they operate in (call and sms costs in India are incidentally one of the lowest in the world!)

But you’re right – Blackberry is definitely more aggressive than Apple on this front. Who knows what may be going on behind the scenes, but on the face of it, the question “if Blackberry can do it, why can’t Apple” is a very interesting question indeed!

  7. go have a life gaurav gupta.
the only good thing in iphone is its capacitive touchscreen.
rest all is way way poor than most of the smatphones.
and people bragging about app store, do a google search for nokia apps, games and themes. u will find more than 1,30,000 websites.
iphone is perfect(infact the best smartphone in the range of 25 to 30k.
    not more than that.
i personally own an iphone 3g and i never felt anything too good about the phone except the user interface.
in nokias and others u get better multimedia, REAL MULTITASKING (BASIC CRITERIA OF A SMARTPHONE WHICH IPHONE LACKS), and much much better build quality plus no network locking.

  11. Have heard so much abt the iPhone 3GS, just can’t wait to get my hands on it, problem is there is no word on its official unveiling in India. Have heard so many rumours abt the launch but no official word from either Vodafone/Airtel abt the pricing or the launch date.
Do you have any idea on its pricing and launch date?

  13. @Manvendra – No official launch date or pricing has been announced yet. There are fresh rumors every week – some say it’ll be launched by the end of october. The latest one is the first week of november. I’m personally not very keen to buy it now. I think i’ll settle for the iPhone 3G, if I don’t get any official news by the middle of october.

  15. Gaurav is it worth it to buy the iPhone 3GS from the grey market or get an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 3GS from the US.
What difficulties can 1 face if using a unlocked/jailbroken iPhone?

  17. Simple enough — Apple takes no responsibility whatsoever if something goes wrong with the phone, i.e. no warranty. If you’re OK with that, you can buy a 3GS rite away! It’s selling on ebay.in too

  19. Sorry, but even though i really love the phone and have been dying waiting, i don’t see it becoming a success, for the simple reason that most people in India are in love with Nokia and they’re going for phone like n97 with their useless features still. So ya only very few people will actually buy it. Though a lot of people have already bought it from the grey market, just like last time.
