Sony Vaio VGN CR35G and CR36G Review

Sony caught my attention with some really neat ads in the print media with a large range of colorful notebooks in shades of Blue, Red, Silver etc. with a pretty girl holding the laptop covering half her face with the laptop. The Sony tag line reads “All eyes on you”.

Having been impressed with the laptop and buying the laptop after a thorough comparison check with Dell, Toshiba and some other machines in my budget of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000, and using it for quite sometime now, I am finally in a position to review the laptop.

The laptop comes packaged neatly in a compact cardboard carton, which contains the laptop, a 2-pin AC charger and a concise product manual. The laptop carry case was delivered separately to me by my vendor.

Hardware check:

The first thing you’ll notice about the laptop is it’s spectacular super bright 14.1″ wide-screen LCD display. It’s by far the brightest LCD monitor I have ever seen. The keyboard keys are placed with a small gap between the keys, something that’s apparently found in Apple laptops as well. It takes a day or two to get used to it however. I ended up hitting the Caps Lock key almost every time I wanted to press the “A”.

The laptop has a “Display off” button to instantly turn off your LCD incase you are running on batteries and want to save on your battery juice. The keyboard doesn’t have seperate keys for commonly used keys like “Page Up”, “Page Down”, “Home” and “End”. These have been combined with the “Function” key. So incase you want to do a “Shift + End”, you’ll end up holding 3 keys together.

The laptop speakers have been positioned on the left and right of the keyboard. Although it seemed like a good idea at first, I am wondering whether after somedays, dust might start accumulating in the speakers tiny net. The sound quality is OK, nothing great. A headphone or a speaker is a must have.

The touchpad isn’t as great as I expected it to be. But I may be biased here. I’ve always hated touchpads (I just can’t seem to use one) so in reality it may not be as bad as I feel it is. I leave this one for you to decide.

AV mode:

This laptop allows you to listen to songs, play movies stored on your hard disk or from CD’s and watch photos, without the need to boot the laptop. The AV mode menu is available by pressing a key on the laptop while it’s in Power Off mode. Although I am not completely sure, the lack of password protection might actually mean that your laptop content can be accessed without permission by through this mode.

Battery Life:

Sony claims the battery life to be about 4 hours (without wi-fi on). However, in my little experience, I have experienced about 2.5 hrs of battery life with Wi-Fi off and about 1.5-2 hours with Wi-Fi on. An optional 9 cell battery is available but that will add some centimeters to the back of the laptop as the battery protrudes from the back.

A small problem with the battery is that the battery doesn’t lock into the laptop too well. The latches to lock it in place aren’t good enough. A mild shock may be enough to dislodge the battery out of place and switch off the laptop.

One excellent feature I found in this laptop is that when the battery gets fully charged, the battery actually STOPS CHARGING. Your laptop runs directly on the DC power from the adapter. This means the battery is protected from over-charging and ultimately enhances battery life.

The good old Sony shock problem:

The laptop comes with a 2-pin adaptor which means that your laptop is not grounded properly. Since the laptop has a metallic armrest (which also has the controls for AV mode), you are highly susceptible for some electric shocks. And the problem is not as uncommon as you think – in fact, most of Sony’s laptops DO give shocks. I have covered the details in a separate blog post.

CR35G or CR36G?

What’s the difference you may ask. The CR35G comes in cool stylish colors like Red, Golden etc. The CR36G comes in Black only. Since I wanted a black anyway, I went for a CR36G. And the good thing is that this model has a fingerprint reader built in. Once your fingerprints are registered, you can use a finger-swipe as an alternative to login to Windows when you boot. You can also use the inbuilt Sony software to authenticate yourself to various websites (say, GMail) using your fingerprint.

The fingerprint reader gave reasonable performance. Typically it takes 2-3 tries before your fingerprint is read successfully and you are allowed access. You can still use the password to login if on some day, the fingerprint reader doesn’t read your print.

The laptop also has an inbuilt web-camera, which is pretty good and a microphone next to it, which I am yet to test.

The laptop cover is black but I feel it’s prone to scratches if not handled delicately. The cover actually snaps back with a thud in case you are not careful to close it gently. Don’t know for sure if it’s actually made like that or if the shocks may harm the LCD panel. The VAIO written in silver on the black cover looks stunning. Sony exudes style! Carrying a VAIO is an ultimate style statement and you’ll know why only after you get it 🙂

Technical Specifications:

I am sure you must have had a look at this before coming to this page, but for the sake of completeness, I’ll reiterate them here.

Overall, a pretty solid and sturdy laptop with a great price/performance ratio. Ideal for anyone looking for a right mix of performance, style and sturdiness.

Overall rating: 8/10 (Excellent)

  1. Hi Gaurav,

You have got a nice site there. Keep up the good work.

I want to buy a notebook in the range of 50K-60K. I am bowled over by two notebooks:

    1) HP Pavillion TX 2001 au/ Tx 2009au tablet pc: This has a touchscreen with a digitizer. It has great handwritting recognition software.

    2) Sony Vaio CR 35/36 : This has great specs.

I am looking for a lightweight notebook. Eventhough Vaio notebook is 600gm heavier than the HP tablet but it looks stunning.

Moreover I had bought a Compaq Presario notebook (V6211au) about a year back and the screen developed hotspots (bright spots) within 4-5 months of purchase. Though the dealer is telling me that HP Pavillion notebooks have far better hardware quality than Compaq Presario but the screen on the HP Pavillion tablet doesn’t look too promising. I don’t have any experience with Sony Vaio but vaio’s screen is much brighter than HP’s.

I am not able to decide which notebook I should go for.

Can you help me out in making a final choice by reviewing the HP tablet or do a comparison between the two as you did between vaio & dell.

    Thanks a ton buddy.

  3. Thanks gaurav for that quick review. It was really helpful.

I want to know a few more thing:

1)You say your sister’s HP laptop also had a problem with the screen, I want to know how long has it been since your sister got her laptop’s screen replaced and is it running fine now?

    2) The HP tablet TX2001/2009 uses AMD Turion 64×2 (2 Ghz) Dual Core processor, I want to know how good is an AMD processor vis-a-vis the intel core 2 duo processor.

Here’s the link to specs of HP Pavillion TX 2001 au tablet notebook as given on the HP website:

  5. I take your point gaurav on the utility of the tablet pc but frankly speaking the added advantage of having all the features of a tablet at the price of a normal laptop really entices me. I don’t have much utility for the built in digitizer though but the form factor of the tablet is really cool. What’s your take?

P.S.: Can you do a pros and cons analysis of the HP tablet and Sony vaio C35/36

    Thanks a ton.

  7. This is what I can see on the specs link you have mentioned in the comment:

    1. The tablet PC has an AMD Turion Processor – and it’s 64 bit too. Try to find out if the apps you intend to run on the PC have a 64 bit version. Can’t say about the performance aspect of the Turion. Have had no experience with AMD processors till now. But you can check this link for more information – http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=1904&cid=2&pg=1

    2. My guess was right – the specs are also lesser than the Sony. You get 1 GB RAM (2 GB in Sony), 160 GB HDD (200 GB in Sony).

On the plus side, it’s 12.1″ display (Sony is 14.1″) and it’s lighter as well.

  9. My sister’s laptop screen was replaced about 7-8 months back. It’s working perfectly fine now. No problems since then.

Infact, HP later on called up and offered extended warranty on this laptop. That costs about Rs. 8000 or so (don’t remember the exact price they quoted) for a 3 yr warranty cover. But it does not cover the laptop battery.

I did not go for the extended warranty as the price seemed too high for the cover. Moreover, I bet the current technology will get out-dated in less than 3 yrs and it’ll be better upgrading to a new laptop than spending money on repairing this old one.

  11. Hi,

Thanks for writing in. Here is my take on your query:

Tablet PC’s look “cool” than an ordinary laptop but do make sure you really “need” tablet PC (with all that touchscreen, digitizer etc.). The configuration of your PC should not be suffering because of these extra features if you don’t plan to use them. Moreover, please confirm if you are getting Microsoft XP or Vista in your tablet PC.

I have had some bad experiences with HP laptops myself. My sister owns one and in about 8-9 months, the LCD started wearing off and tons of dead pixels (permanent bright spots) came on the LCD. Since it was still in warranty, it was replaced for free. The replacement took about 7 days however.

I have seen the Sony Vaio and it’s a pretty solid machine overall. You’re right about the LCD – it’s just stunningly bright and beautiful. Overall, I think Sony is great. Also consider the Dell XPS 1330 and Dell XPS 1530 since both of them are also highly recommended laptops in this price range.

  13. I’m planning to purchase laptop around next month. So I was on search on reviews, basically Vaio CR36G & Dell XPS 1330 and I found it here> Thanks buddy.
I’m still bit confused. Have you tried to note these things of Dell XPS 1330 over Sony??
    250GB Hard Disk
    3GB RAM
    Slim look (13.3″ and slim)
    1.9~2Kg weight
And people say Dell is good for rough n tough use !!
Please dont think that I’m biased towards Dell.
For sony what i feel is it’s brand value and graphic card.
Now in this situation which one will be better to go for. Because I dont want to regret after purchasing.
again 3GB RAM is not distributed evenly between the two slots in Dell XPS….

  15. Well I think it depends on your usage and budget.

Ask yourself – Do you really need an ultramobile laptop? 13.3 inches may sound cool and look cool but at the end of the day, it’s a small laptop with a cramped keyboard and smaller viewing area.

If you’re on the move whole-day, it makes sense to go for it. If you will be using a laptop on a desk anyway, go for a 14″ Sony.

Before taking the plunge, I suggest you have a look at the 1330 in person. You just might change your mind, like I did.

Specs wise, 250GB is not a mind-boggling increase over a 200GB in Sony and the RAM is 3GB and hence will not be dual channel.

Moreover, I have read somewhere that Dell is about to release the XPS range with a new set of processors (the Penryn series) that will be launched by 28 March or so. Keep a watch on what other people are blogging and posting on forums.

BTW, this Sony model already has that new processor. And I should admit, I was desperate to buy a laptop really soon 😛

Can’t say about the availability of Dell in your city. I am sure there must be some popular IT hub in Calcutta like we have Nehru Place in Delhi.

That should be an ideal place to try.

Alternatively, try finding someone who can introduce you to someone who owns a Dell.

  25. Hi Pavan,

    Check the following:

    1. The earth pin in your wall socket actually works. Call an electrician to check your house wiring if needed.

    2. Check if there is an electrical leakage in your modem which is leaking current to your laptop’s body.

If nothing works, put cellotape on the metallic part of the laptop.

  27. H Gaurav,
Nice site you have here… I’ve decided to buy a laptop and for me .. it’s got to be a VAIO … You’ve got to help me choose between the CR35 and the CR36… I’ve seen pics of the color ones on the net… How does the CR36 look ? Its supposed to be matte finish right ? Is it less attractive when compared to the colour ones ? It would be nice if you post pics of your laptop…. thanx

  29. Hi Gaurav,
    Nice review.
Hows the performance of Vista O/S?
Do you have any idea about upgrading to Vista Business or downgrading to XP Prof?

  30. Hi Gaurav,Nice review.Hows the performance of Vista O/S?Do you have any idea about upgrading to Vista Business or downgrading to XP Prof?

  31. @loki Well I don’t have a good digicam right now and neither am I too good at taking pro pictures. I bet you can find pictures of this laptop on Google image search.

This laptop does not have a matte touch. It has the same glossy finish like the other colored models, just that it’s in black.

    @sri

Vista performs just fine on this laptop. No issues as such. Vista gives it a performance index of 3.8 which is reasonably good I would say.

I am not sure if there is any utility in upgrading to Vista Business. Home premium covers all features you would generally use. If you MUST upgrade, go directly for Ultimate I would suggest. Downgrading to XP should not be required. If you are doing it so that you can run your old software on it, Vista has a “compatibilty” mode setting where you can execute any software in Win XP SP2 mode.

  35. @vikash Ya, it’s worth the money for sure. Since I hardly use my laptop for gaming, I did not cover that aspect. If you wanna buy a gaming device, preferably go for Dell XPS 1530. That one has a better graphics card in built.

  39. budget 40, 000 to 55000(only if the getting a great deal)
    2) screen size 14” or 15”
    3) Hp or Sony(more I read about it, more I get disappointed…most of the reviews that I read were quite old (2004_2007), open to other brands too.
    4) Mostly business purpose, reading e books, excel/spread sheet, word doc, on occasion watching movies, net surfing and very rare few games(like GTA or IGI2)
    5) Will be using it almost daily(need to take it to a place that’s 6 kms from my place, won’t be travelling much with it.
    6) Default battery life would do. Will be using it more or less on power cable.

I am looking for something that fast and gives me a performance, something that does not requires me to update it for long time (few years).
For cost reason, I might be buying the laptop from Dubai.

What do people say about Sony VAIO CR 36 or CR 34? Is Sony a safe option to buy, given that it is a becoming just a brand name?

    Thank you…

I am looking for something that fast and gives me a performance, something that does not requires me to update it for long time (few years). For cost reason, I might be buying the laptop from Dubai. What do people say about Sony VAIO CR 36 or CR 34? Is Sony a safe option to buy, given that it is a becoming just a brand name? Thank you…

  47. For gaming I would recommend a Dell XPS since that one has a better graphics card. But it’s not the ultimate laptop if you are looking for a gaming device. Do have a look at some CNET reviews for good gaming devices in your budget.

For business use, sony vaio is better.

  49. Hey Gaurav,
Well as you said business then choose vaioc35..
But what about playing games on Vaiocr35? I mean just standard games on normal resolution. Cause i want to buy a vaiocr35 in hong kong and i wan t to use it mostly for watching movies, study, surfing, downloading and sometimes playing a game (not an old game but recent ones on low/medium resolution).

So does it play games on low/medium games pretty okey?
I know Dell or some else are better for game notebook but i am not a hardcore gamer who needs high end. Just medium quality and etc.

    Answer please 🙂
    Ciao

Besides this the x2300 is saying that it got 128mb dedicated memory but are there any turbocache so the videocard can take memory from 2gb ddr? Cause 128 is a bit to less to play games i read somewhere.

    Answer please 🙂

  53. Hey Gaurav,

I just bought this sony CR35G n quite thrilled the first time by its specs:). After a while, i can’t seem to work well under Vista for my design softwares such sketchup n cad, n it’s really frustrating.
I’ve compared it with DELL xps with the same spec, and vaio with older spec on XP, n it turned out to be better w/ XP.
So, how’d u recommend? I heard that downgrading to xp for this piece is quite confusing since some of its features aren’t compatible w/ xp, on the other hand i can’t work under vista either:/…

    Many thanks.

  55. Ya, for advanced 3D, this Vaio laptop may not be the right choice… infact, I’d certainly recommend a desktop in such cases. Powerful laptops meant for CAD etc cost a bomb!!

The problem with XP is that some features in the laptop (say, the fingerprint scanner etc.) might not work unless you get the relevant drivers for Win XP. There should not be any problem downgrading as such but just make sure all the relevant hardware drivers are either natively supported by XP or you can download them from somewhere.

  59. @hargurpreet

    Thanks for your kind words.

The prices of both laptops are almost the same. There might be 1k or so difference. If you are not tempted by those fancy colors, go for plain black so that you can get a fingerprint reader too 🙂

Haven’t really seen or used any ASUS laptop so far and nor do anyone in my contact circle has one. ASUS’s new EEPC is making the headlines everywhere and you MUST check that out, even though it’s not a full fledged laptop and costs < 20K.

  73. Hi Just purchased a brand new vaio fz35g from Sony Company showroom from Atria Mall Mumbai. When turned on for 1st time it have Virus Hacktools on it. Called Sony for Help they made me do the recovery from the mirror image supplied with vaio on the hard disk. That didn’t help either the virus was back. Took it to company service centre at Gamdevi Mumbai. The technician again did the recovery only to find the virus re-sruface again. Twenty days have passed since then the Company has no answer to this. Cutomer care Call Centre just promises to call back each time but does not call back. I’m not sure what to do. Due to this I haven’t even started using the laoptop since I bought it last month. Feel cheated and shart changed by Sony. Anyone with any ideas please help ??

Hi Gaurav..I am thinking of buying HP DV2713TU as it fits in my budget and other requirements.I just read the dead pixel problem in your blog..how are the chances of the same continuing in the above mentioned model?..I am planning to carry the laptop to Germany.Do they have a good number of service centers there? Are the internet connectivity parts enough for the requirements there???Do you suggest any other model within 50K from the same or any other company for use in Germnay?

  81. I tried to install Windows XP on the CR36G yesterday, and I wasn’t able to do so… the installation process hanged in between. It succeeded second time, but the machine hanged during the first windows boot.

I tried to boot into safe mode etc. but even that couldn’t work.

    Moral of the story:
    1. Make recovery disks asap. Don’t use your Vista license.

    2. Use linux if you can.

  95. Hi Gaurav,

Thank god ive got this blog to solve my problem with Sony Vaio CR35g ,Ive got a serious issues in it like Is the laptop has PCI Ex slot ??? Can the graphics card can be upgraded to any other new ones ? Ive already upgraded my RAM and HDD to 4Gb ram and 500 gb HDD but what about the graphics card ??? Plz HELP ME reply me asap

  96. Well, I have no idea whether this laptop has it’s graphics card built into the motherboard or whether it can be upgraded seperately. You should call up the Sony customer care or service center directly and ask them. You might need to poke them a bit to get an answer.
